Your walk in the historic Hitchcock Woods, the largest urban forest in America, will heighten your senses to the sounds, smells and tranquility of a pineland forest. There are over thirty different species of birds in Hitchcock Woods. The Red-cockaded Woodpecker which had disappeared from the Woods was reintroduced back in 2016 and is now thriving with over fourteen Red-cockaded Woodpeckers.
Our prescribed burn initiative has improved the forest by removing non-native plants, trees and decaying debris that could become fuel for a wildfire. The burns help the forest regenerate foraging and improves habitat for wildlife. You will see areas that have been part of this project.
Springtime brings out the beauty of the six different species of pines and the hundreds of other trees, plants, vines and flowers, especially the Kalmia. Hitchcock Woods will provide an enjoyable adventure. Enjoy your walk!
